What Is DNS?

Every time you type a URL, your computer has to ask a DNS server "what's the IP address for this?" before the page can even start loading. That lookup happens in milliseconds, though not always the same milliseconds. ISP-assigned resolvers are often overloaded or routed through distant data centers, adding 50-200ms of waiting before your browser does anything useful. Multiply that delay across the dozens of domains a single modern webpage pulls scripts, fonts, and images from, and a slow resolver can add a full second or more to page load. How to Change DNS

Your router and your devices ship with whatever DNS your ISP hands out by default: usually not the fastest option, and rarely the most private. Switching takes under five minutes. Set it once on your router and every device on your network benefits, or configure it per-device if you only want it on your laptop or phone. The settings live in different places depending on your hardware (router admin panels, Windows network adapter properties, macOS System Settings, or your phone's WiFi config), but the values you enter are identical across all of them. Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), Google (8.8.8.8), and Quad9 (9.9.9.9) are solid free starting points, but the only way to know what's actually fastest from where you are is to test it.

FAQ & Troubleshooting

Seeing inconsistent results between test runs? That's usually not the DNS server's fault. VPNs reroute your queries through a different network entirely, ad blockers and privacy extensions intercept requests before they leave the browser, and your OS caches recent lookups so repeat queries look artificially fast. Public WiFi and corporate networks add another wrinkle, since they sometimes force traffic through a transparent proxy regardless of which DNS server you've configured. Turn off the VPN, pause blocking extensions, and flush your local DNS cache before benchmarking if you want numbers you can trust. Docker Deployment

Pull the image, run one docker run command, and you've got a private DNS testing backend on any Linux box, cloud VPS, or Raspberry Pi (3, 4, and 5 all supported). Multi-arch builds cover amd64, arm64, and arm/v7, so it runs the same whether it's a $5 VPS or a Pi sitting on your shelf. Spin up a node in a specific region if you want to see how resolution behaves from that location specifically, useful for catching ISP routing issues a single test point won't show you, or for confirming a CDN's GeoDNS setup is routing visitors correctly. It's also a clean way to validate DNS behavior with and without a VPN tunnel active, since you control both ends of the test. Each one talks to your OS's network stack directly instead of going through a browser sandbox, so the numbers you get reflect what your system is doing, not what a browser's internal DNS cache or prefetch logic is doing on its own. Nothing leaves your device; there's no backend logging your results, because a local network test doesn't need one. That also makes the apps a reasonable choice for network admins testing inside environments where sending data to a third-party server isn't an option.

Query intervals, concurrency limits, and output format are all adjustable in code, and the output is plain enough to pipe into your own dashboard or alerting setup without writing a parser from scratch. It's maintained by the same team that's been running OpenSpeedTest since 2013, so it's not a side project that'll disappear; issues and PRs get looked at, and the codebase has had to stay maintainable through over a decade of real production traffic.
